Physical Requirements
It's important for your safety and enjoyment that you are appropriately fit for
the level of outing you choose. Please use the following key to gauge the level
required for each outing. (Note: these are approximations. Variations in distances
and weight-carried will always occur.)
Activity Ratings
Level 1: For beginners, moderate activity level
Good fitness is required. For those with little or no prior experience in this activity. Backpacking courses may involve 2–5 miles of hiking with pack weight between 25–45 lbs. Rock climbing courses require the ability to use both hands and feet.
Level 2: Good fitness is required. Moderate-strenuous activity level.
For those with prior experience in this activity. Backpacking trips may involve carrying loaded backpack for 2–4 days, 5–10 miles per day. Rock climbing courses are more technical in nature, requiring past training or experience.
Level 3: Strong fitness is required. Strenuous activity level.
For those with significant experience in this activity. Backpacking trips may involve carrying loaded backpack for 2–4 days, 7–12 miles per day. Rock climbing courses are very technical in nature, requiring significant past training or experience.
A lack of fitness is the most common reason for a client needing to withdraw from our courses. Please don't over-estimate your fitness, nor under-estimate the rigors of activities such as hiking or climbing at altitude. Pick the right trip and train hard for it — your well-being and enjoyment will be enhanced through adequate preparation! Always plan on arriving at the start of your trip fit, well-rested, and hydrated.
Wilderness Outings cannot determine your physical fitness for any course or trip, and makes no claim to attempt to do so. We strongly recommend discussing these activities with your physician, and we are happy to provide more information about the physical requirements of any activity. In extreme cases, Wilderness Outings reserves the right to remove a client from a course or trip if the activity appears to place any client at greater risk.
Transportation
Transportation is your own responsibility. Our coordinator may be able to assist you in finding a carpool with other clients.
Meals
You provide your own breakfasts, lunches, snacks and water (unless otherwise noted).
Assumption of Risk and Liability
Warning: Outdoor adventures entail hazardous activities in remote areas in the
backcountry. In order to participate on any of our Outings, you will be required
to read and sign an
Assumption of Risks and Release
of Liability Form
that states,
in part: "I understand that these types of adventures are inherently dangerous
and that there is risk to anyone engaging in this activity, and I knowingly
assume any and all such risks."
Registration, Cancellation
and Transfer Policy
The Wilderness Outings Registration, Cancellation and Transfer Policy is based upon our goal to deliver quality, well-planned outings for our clients. Late cancellations and transfers place courses at risk of cancellation, creating hardship and frustration for other registered clients. Further, once a client is confirmed on a course, Wilderness Outings incurs multiple expenses that cannot be recovered after a cancellation. For these reasons, please choose your course carefully.
Registration: All courses require full payment to reserve a space. For Wilderness First Responder courses or High Sierra Backpacking Adventures, a minimum deposit of $300 may be made, with the balance due two weeks prior to the start of the course. Unpaid balances will result in non-participation, and are subject to the Cancellation Policy.
Cancellations or transfer requests will be handled according to the following criteria:
- 15 days or more prior to Day 1 of your course: Cancellations or transfer request will be subject to a $40 processing fee, per registration. You may transfer only once to a future course.
- 14 days or less prior to Day 1: Cancellations result in 100% forfeiture of tuition. You may transfer to a future course with a credit of 30% of your paid tuition- this credit must be used within six months of your original course.
If you must cancel your registration, and if you can find another person to fill your spot, you will receive a full refund. There is no refund for no-shows or early departure from a course.
Weather Considerations: Wilderness Outings holds sole discretion for determination of weather cancellation. On the day of the event, Outings that run until 12 pm or longer will be considered complete. In the event that Wilderness Outings cancels an Outing due to inclement weather, your Outing will be rescheduled (at no cost) to a future date of your convenience, or the full fees may be refunded.
For Wilderness Medicine Courses: If, due to tardiness or absence, you become ineligible for certification, there will be no refunds. For Recertification, Bridge or Challenge students, please note that if you arrive at your course and are determined to be ineligible for your course, there will be no refund of course tuitions. You are responsible to ensure your eligibility for this course with Wilderness Medical Associates (WMA). Contact WMA at 207.730.7331 or Wilderness Outings for more information
