Want to feel more confident about finding your way when you travel in the wilderness? Maybe you'd like to head off the trail and travel cross-country? This one day field-based course covers the essential skills of backcountry navigation, in an outdoor environment (not a store or parking lot). We begin by learning to read a topographic map and how to use a compass. Then we're off on a hike so we can practice interpreting the map's contour lines as they relate to the shape of the land. You'll learn to locate your position via bi-section or triangulation and practice walking a bearing in a short orienteering exercise at the end of class.
