Wilderness Outings is always looking for skilled outdoor individuals
with an interest in providing quality educational experiences to our
clients. We seek Instructors who are committed to professionalism in
their interactions with clients, co-workers, and the public, and who
possess integrity and reliability in their working relationships.
Courses
are commonly one to two days in length, over weekends. A few courses
can run three to six days in length. Most staff work for Wilderness
Outings as a secondary career, with another primary career as a source
of income.
Wilderness Outings compensation scale is competitive with other
similar outdoor education programs, and is based on qualification
and seniority. Staff are eligible for Pro Deals on outdoor equipment,
as well as discounts on wilderness medicine courses offered by Adventure
Risk Management.
Technical skills and professional experience are important
qualifications to become a Wilderness Outings Instructor. Here
is a general listing
of background, experience, and certification that we seek in our
staff:
Backpacking Instructors

Significant personal and professional backpacking
experience, in multiple environments, at all times of the year.
Mountain and desert backpacking experience is desired, on trips
of at least one week or longer. Winter camping experience is
desirable. |

Professional experience with instruction of backpacking. |
Rock Climbing Instructors

Significant personal rock climbing experience
in a variety of climbing areas; significant experience in
multiple disciplines of rock climbing: traditional, sport,
multi-pitch, top rope. Ability to safely and efficiently
place climbing anchors using natural and artificial protection. |

Professional experience with instruction in rock climbing. |

Certification from the American Mountain Guides
Association, at a minimum level of Top Rope Instructor. |
Navigation Instructors
| • |
Significant personal experience utilizing
navigational skills in a variety of environments, including
mountains and desert. |

Professional experience with instruction
of navigational skills. |
Medical Certifications
| • |
All Wilderness Outings Instructors are required
to hold a minimum of Wilderness Advanced First Aid certification
from a recognized provider. All staff are required to hold
current CPR certification including the skills of two rescuer
adult CPR, child CPR, and airway obstruction in the child
and adult. |
